The DISCover technique scooped the Best Exploration Technology Award at the 8th Annual World Oil Awards. The goal of the awards is to applaud the innovations and innovators of the global upstream petroleum industry, demonstrating the technological feats that are the hallmarks of the business.
DISCover deep interpolated streamer coverage is a technique designed to efficiently deliver 3D seismic data with enhanced frequency bandwidth, providing both high resolution and deep penetration. The technique can be used to improve imaging beneath highly absorptive overburdens, including basalt and salt, and to stabilize the inversion of seismic data for rock properties away from wells.
The award was judged by a third-party advisory board and the Next Generation Committee (professionals under 35 years of age), which are comprised of industry leaders with a diverse range of expertise.
The result was announced at an annual black-tie gala dinner in Houston, Texas, which was attended by 350 of the industry’s leading lights. The theme of the 2009 award ceremony was “Designing a Brighter Tomorrow.”
This is the second consecutive year that WesternGeco has been victorious at the World Oil awards. In 2008, the organization won the Best Exploration Technology Award for Coil Shooting single-vessel full azimuth acquisition—a method of acquiring marine seismic data while following a circular path. The efficient and cost-effective technique delivers data that addresses many of the challenges of imaging complex geologies.
