Featured Seismic Data Processing Center – Stavanger, Norway

Oil was found offshore Norway in the mid-1960s and today Oil and Gas is Norway's biggest industry. Stavanger is the oil capital of Norway, home to many international production and service companies. WesternGeco, through its predecessor companies “Geco” and “Western Geophysical,” has had a significant seismic data processing presence in Stavanger since the 1970s.

The WesternGeco Stavanger Data Processing (DP) Center is located within the Schlumberger building, just outside the town center, close to the airport. This location, which houses representatives from all Schlumberger business segments, is ideally located for easy access to clients based in Stavanger, other parts of Norway, and internationally.

The Stavanger DP Center currently employs more than 40 processing geophysicists. The center offers a complete range of marine seismic processing services to the industry, from 3D exploration in Arctic seas to 4D time-lapse and 4C multicomponent depth imaging over mature reservoirs. Unlike many other regions of the world, 4D and 4C have been significant business segments in Norway during the last decade and the Stavanger DP center has captured a leading role in both areas.

4D processing in Stavanger has been performed on both conventional and Q-Marine* single-sensor seismic surveys. Norwegian oil and gas companies have led the way in the take-up of Q-Marine acquisition, and over the last few years processing Q-Marine data has been a significant part of the Stavanger DP business. As a result, the center has developed significant expertise in the processing of 4D data—often working in cooperation with our onboard processing crews to create 4D-ready products just a few days or weeks after the last acquisition shot.

Because of its 4D processing expertise, its active 4D market, and its co-location with the Schlumberger Stavanger Research Group, the Stavanger DP Center is recognized as the WesternGeco Center of Excellence for 4D seismic data processing. This means that the Stavanger DP Center acts as a source of knowledge on 4D processing for the rest of the company, providing a variety of services to support and develop 4D business worldwide. These services include classroom and on-the-job training, creation of 4D processing workflows and best practices, definition of 4D technology requirements, and 4D technical marketing services.

Even after almost 40 years of operations, the WesternGeco Stavanger DP Center looks forward to further expanding services and continued business success, within Norway and internationally.
